Those beautiful bookmarks you see down below are from Little Inklings on Etsy. I ordered them while I was drinking wine on a Friday night, so I don't actually rememver ordering them. They are gorgeous though! I won Five Days at Memorial in a readathon back in January.

I did something extra fun this past weekend: I went to my first-ever book swap. I brought five books with me, and left with a bag filled with new goodies. The event was held in a tiny little bar in a sketchy part of my city, and I got lost trying to get there, but it was worth it! I picked up some books that I've been thinking about buying, as well as some interesting hidden gems (I'm looking at you, Serial Killers). I'm hoping that I'll be able to slow down my book buying next month. There have just been so many great deals and sales, and I don't have an ounce of self control.

March is upon us! So many exciting things to look forward to in my world: my birthday, a week-long break from work, and some cool new book, game and movie releases. February had me in a bit of a reading slump, but I'm back on board now. Let's jump right in to my reading plans:
  • Microserfs by Douglas Coupland (BC - published in 1995)
  • Dark Places by Gillian Flynn (ATY - multiple perspectives)
  • Invisible North: The Search for Answers on a Troubled Reserve by Alexandra Shimo  (ATY - highest rated on TBR)
  • Fifteen Dogs by Andre Alexis  (ATY - based on mythology)
  • Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys (ATY - recommended by another author)
  • The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr, Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (#classichorror17)
  • Unmentionable: The Victorian Lady's Guide to Sex, Marriage and Manners by Therese O'neill (Audible TBR)
  • The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje (AtZ - E)
  • For Today I Am a Boy by Kim Fu  (AtZ - F)
  • Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk (BC - 1996)
  • Naked by David Sedaris (BC - 1997)

February 2017 Wrap-Up

2/26/2017

Is it really the end of February already!? Time flies when life gets busy. I started off the month in a bit of a slump, but I managed to pick through a few books. Thankfully, I think the slump is over, and I'm back to reading at a normal pace. I read seven books this month, and I have two in progress that will carry over to March (though I'm hoping to finish them either tonight or tomorrow after work).

Books completed:
  • 20th Century Ghosts by Joe Hill - 2/5 stars
    • As with many short story collections, this was full of hits and misses. Unfortunately, the misses outweighed the hits for me. The first story was excellent, however! I could have read a whole novel about the ghost in the theatre.
  • The Tell-Tale Heart by Edgar Allen Poe - 4/5 stars
    • I really enjoyed this short story, and I'm so glad that I included it in #classichorror2017. It's a really really short read, but Poe packs a spooky punch into only a few dozen pages.
  • The Gunslinger by Stephen King - 3/5 stars
    • This was a good start to the Dark Tower series. Many questions are left unanswered, so I will have to read the rest of the series soon! I'm looking forward to watching the film adaptations when it's released, later this year.
  • The Children Act by Ian Mcewan - 2/5 stars
    • This story had a lot of potential to be intriguing and controversial, but I felt that the narration focused too much on the main character's inner monologue and marital problems. I also found the main character to be annoying, which didn't help.
  • Signs Preceding the End of the World by Yuri Herrera - 2/5 stars
    • Much like The Children Act, this book didn't live up to my high expectations. I struggled to wrap my mind around some of the metaphors, and the peculiar formatting caused some confusion for me.
  • Detroit: An American Autopsy by Charlie Leduff - 4/5 stars
    • I devoured this book in one sitting! It's part memoir, part history, part sociology, and completely fascinating. As a Canadian, I'm less familiar with some of the issues that Detroit faced in the first decade of the 21st century, but this book opened my eyes. Charlie's personal experiences among the people living in Detroit, from all walks of life, made this book even more interesting. I highly recommend it. Plus, it pulled me right out of my slump!
  • Preacher, Book 1 by Garth Ennis - 3/5 stars
    • I've had this comic book volume on my shelf for quite some time. I finally sat down to read it at the end of the month, and while it was good, it just wasn't what I was expecting.
In Progress:
  • Fragments: Poems, Intimate Notes, Letters by Marilyn Monroe (library ebook)
  • Pit Bull by Bronwen Dickey (audiobook)
  • Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil by John Berendt
Stay tuned for my March TBR!

I'm in a MAJOR reading slump right now, but that hasn't stopped me from shopping. Hip hip, hooray for Amazon and Kobo!

Monthly Review: January 2017

1/28/2017

January is almost always my best reading month. I get excited about the new challenges I've joined, and I like to get the year off to a good start. I don't think I've ever had a month like January 2017, though! I read 19 books this month. I think that's a personal record. How have I done it? Well, I rarely watch TV these days, which has helped. I'm sure that once my favourite shows start up again, my reading will cut back. But this has been a great start to my year. Stay tuned for my February 2017 TBR!

Hey, remember me? I took a small, unplanned hiatus from blogging this month. I won't give out too many excuses, but basically, I needed to recharge after the holidays. That being said, I haven't stopped reading. In fact, I've read almost 20 books this month! I've also been buying more books than I can keep track of. After organizing my shelves, I traded in almost 50 books at my local used bookstore, and came home with 20 new ones! I won't list all of those, but I'm picking back up with the books I've purchased this week.
