Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, physical or virtual. Have you ever put a hold on popular books at the library, expecting them to trickle in over a few weeks or months? Only to be surprised when they all come at once? Yeah, me too. That's basically what happened to me this week. When the Goodreads Choice Award nominees were announced, I went a little crazy and put about 30 books on hold. Oops. I guess I'll be staying home to read all week. There's a reasonable chance that I still won't get to all of them, but here's hoping. In my defense, I didn't actually pay for any of these and I've been reading like crazy lately....right? Library Books: Against my own proper judgment, I also bought a few ebooks: And two audiobooks: OH. And I bought books at the thrift store because self-control is for weak people:
(In my defense, I promise that I went there to look at scarves and one of these is a highly-recommended teaching book while the other two are classics...)

Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice. Grab your current read, turn to page 56 or 56%, and post a few sentences!
Today I'm reading: The Wrath and the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh " 'They will fight. They should fight. And you will ensure it amounts to nothing. You will do your duty to your king. Do you understand?' " (page 1) " 'Khalid is not my friend. He is not my enemy, either. He is my king. I remember the boy he was, quite fondly.' " (page 56) Every Wednesday, I discuss an upcoming book release. This feature was inspired by Waiting On Wednesday, which has since become inactive. This week, I'm featuring The Spy by Paulo Coelho. Release date: November 22, 2016
Paulo Coelho is the author of The Alchemist, which has over one million ratings on Goodreads and is usually included in lists of the best books of the 20th century. I haven't read many of his books, but I really enjoy his writing style and I love stories about strong women. I'm fascinated by the early 20th century as well, so I think that this book will be right up my alley!
What books are you looking forward to this week? Read-o-rama is hosted via Youtube and Twitter. This edition of Read-o-rama takes place between November 18 and 20, 2016. Here are the challenges for this round:
Here are my goals:
I also want to point out that I've added a few pages to my blog menu in preparation for 2017. I've decided to host the Classic Horror Challenge (more details on that in the sign up post next week), and I've joined Around the Year in 52 Books and the Sherlock Challenge. I'm also joining an ongoing challenge that runs for five years, The Nonfiction Adventure. Click the links in my top menu bar to find out more information!
Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and the Bookish.
This week's topic is: Movie Freebie! I've decided to compile a list of ten of my favourite documentaries, in no particular order. Bonus - most are available on Netflix!
This week was a little bit busier than I expected, so I didn't get a ton of reading done. Now that my blog is set up and I don't have any social obligations this week, I'm hoping to really dive into a few new books. Also, all of my library holds seem to be trickling in, so I need to get started on those! What I Read: What I'm Enjoying Now: What's Next: A Stolen Life was a really difficult read and it took a lot out of me emotionally. I'm following it up with something a little lighter (So You've Been Publicly Shamed) and I'm still trying to work my way through Blood Red Snow White, which I've had on my Kobo for well over a year.
Scrappy Little Nobody is (finally) being released this week, and I'm so excited to start listening! Anna Kendrick's Twitter feed always cracks me up, so I have high hopes for this book. If I finish Scrappy Little Nobody, I'll get started with Hillbilly Elegy. I've heard that this book is a great look into alt-right culture in the United States, and I think that it's a good time to pick it up. What Belongs to You and The Wrath and the Dawn are waiting for me at the library. They're both popular books and recent releases, so I'm looking forward to seeing if they live up to the hype. I don't usually read teen fiction, so The Wrath and the Dawn is outside of my comfort zone. What are YOU reading this week? The Mount TBR Challenge is hosted by My Reader's Block. The goal is to read as many books as possible from your already-owned TBR. Yearly reading challenges are one of my favourite parts of the book blogger universe! This challenge runs from January 1-December 31, 2017.
Challenge Levels: Pike's Peak: Read 12 books from your TBR pile/s Mount Blanc: Read 24 books from your TBR pile/s Mt. Vancouver: Read 36 books from your TBR pile/s Mt. Ararat: Read 48 books from your TBR piles/s Mt. Kilimanjaro: Read 60 books from your TBR pile/s El Toro: Read 75 books from your TBR pile/s Mt. Everest: Read 100 books from your TBR pile/s Mount Olympus (Mars): Read 150+ books from your TBR pile/s The last time I counted, I had nearly 200 books on my Kobo, Audible account and bookshelves. I don't buy nearly as many books these days, but I tend to borrow from the library really regularly. That keeps me from focusing on the books I already own. I'm going to aim for Mt. Vancouver and see where the year takes me! Stacking the Shelves is hosted by Tynga's Reviews. Stacking The Shelves is all about sharing the books you are adding to your shelves, physical or virtual. I bought some great eBooks this week: As well as a few digital audiobooks from Audible: What did you pick up this week? Comment below!
Book Beginnings is hosted by Rose City Reader. The Friday 56 is hosted by Freda's Voice. Grab your current read, turn to page 56 or 56%, and post a few sentences! Today I'm reading: Blood Red Snow White by Marcus Sedgwick "Beyond the sunrise, halfway to the moon, and so very far away it would make your feet weep to think about it, lies a land vast in size and deep in sadness." (4% on Kobo) "Arthur has seen it many times before, he knows what it means. News, or more often the rumour of news, from the Revolution, from the war with Germany, and lately, from the war against the White Army, faithful to the tsar." (56% on Kobo) It is 1917, and the world is tearing itself to pieces in a dreadful war, but far to the east of the trenches, another battle is breaking out - the Russian Revolution has just begun... Blood Red, Snow White captures the mood of this huge moment in history through the adventure of one man who was in the middle of it all; Arthur Ransome, a young British journalist who had first run away to Russia to collect fairy tales. Told as three linked novellas, part one captures the days of revolution but retells the story as Russian Fairy Tale, with typical humour and unashamed brutality. Part two is a spy story, set over the course of one evening, as Ransome faces up to his biggest challenge, and part three is a love story, full of tragedy and hope, as every good Russian love story should be. I'm joining a day late, but I can never say no to a good readathon. This one is hosted by Caffeinated Book Reviewer. I'll be updating mostly via Twitter. Follow me here!
Here are the books I'm hoping to read this weekend:
